Sexual Assault Treatment
Sexual assault, also known as sexual abuse refers to any form of sexual contact without voluntary consent. Most sexual abuse experts agree sexual abuse is never only about sex, instead it is often an attempt to gain power over others. For this reason, sexual assault cuts across gender, age, sexual orientation, ethnicity, ability or profession.
The aftereffects of sexual violence can have a pervasive impact on an individual’s life. A range of experiences like intrusive thoughts, unpleasant dreams, increased irritability, low mood, or avoidance of reminders are common and a natural response to experiencing such a traumatic event yet, they can often persist months or years after the original incident. In some cases Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can develop, and the decision to seek counselling can prove to be very beneficial.
Once a psychologist for the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton, and the University of Alberta Sexual Assault Centre, Maddalena has extensive experience working with individuals impacted by the aftermath of sexual assault and advanced training in the treatment of those suffering from PTSD.
